What maths covers in grade 1
In grade 1 children learn to calculate confidently with numbers up to 20. First come addition and subtraction up to 10, then sums up to 20 without bridging ten, and finally the step across ten, for example 8 + 5. This step is the first big hurdle in arithmetic for many children.
Our grade 1 assessments check these stages in separate blocks. You can see at a glance whether your child is already confident up to 10 and where bridging ten still causes trouble. Every sheet comes with an answer sheet for checking together.
How to tell whether it has stuck
- Does your child still count on their fingers, or do they already split numbers, for example 8 + 5 as 8 + 2 + 3?
- Do they know the pairs of numbers that make 10 without having to think for long?
- Can they name the matching subtraction for an addition?
The content follows the Swiss Lehrplan 21 curriculum. Exactly when a topic is covered depends on the canton, the school and the textbook.
