Tutoring

Professional tutoring in maths, German, English and further subjects. Experienced teachers build skills and confidence.

For students of all levels

For us good tutoring does not start with as many extra exercises as possible, but with a question: what is actually causing the difficulty? A poor grade is a result, not a diagnosis. Sometimes a foundation from an earlier school year is missing, sometimes the learning strategy does not fit yet, and sometimes the material is understood but it goes wrong in the exam.

That is exactly where we start, usually one to one, and in a small group if you prefer, in Aarau, in Cham and online. Our teachers close gaps, calmly explain the school material again and help your child to work independently and with more confidence.

What your child can expect

  • Maths, German, English and further subjects
  • One to one, or in a small group if you prefer
  • Gymnasium preparation for grades 5/6 and grade 9
  • In Aarau, in Cham and online

Subjects and school levels

Most children come to us because of maths, from times tables to fractions and percentages through to algebra, geometry and word problems. Because so much in maths builds on what came before, we do not only work on the current chapter but, when needed, go back to the foundation that is missing.

In German, depending on the child, we work on spelling, grammar, reading comprehension or how to structure an essay, and in English on vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing and speaking. We support students from primary school to lower secondary. We work with our own programme, which is designed for the Swiss school system and takes regional differences into account, for example between the cantons of Aargau and Zug. Your child also brings their school books, so we work on exactly the current topics and upcoming exams.

Preparing for Gymnasium and the next school level

We prepare children and teenagers for the move to Gymnasium and the exams that go with it, in Aarau and in Cham. This mainly concerns two points in time: grades 5 and 6, with children of about 10 to 13, and grade 9, with teenagers of about 13 to 15.

First we clarify what will be tested and where your child stands. Then we work specifically on the topics that are not yet secure, and later on tasks under realistic conditions, with limited time and no help. Simple exam strategies are part of it too: read the task carefully, start with what you are sure of, do not get stuck on one difficult task and check at the end. The earlier preparation starts, the more time there is to build the foundations calmly.

How a lesson works

A lesson lasts 60 minutes. At the start we briefly look back: what has happened since last time, was there an exam, what went well? Then comes the working phase. The teacher explains a new concept or works it out together with your child, and after that your child works on their own as much as possible.

When a mistake happens, we do not give the right answer straight away but ask: up to which point is your approach correct? Which information from the task do we need here? That way your child learns to check their own solution. At the end there is a short summary and, where it makes sense, a small and clearly limited task for home.

On site, online and in several languages

Tutoring takes place at our locations in Aarau and Cham or online. We arrange the times individually to fit your child’s timetable. Lessons are taught in German or English, and in further languages on request.

We stay in touch with you: we want to know when an exam is coming up and which method is used at school, so that no unnecessary confusion arises. In return we tell you clearly what we are working on and what progress we see, for example when your child starts a task more independently or spots their own mistake.

Prices

One to one lessons cost from CHF 75 per 60 minute lesson. Siblings receive a 10 % discount for the first, 15 % for the second and 20 % for every further child. If we think tutoring is not the right thing for your child at the moment, we will tell you openly.

Where the course takes place

We offer tutoring at both Brainorithmics locations, in Aarau and in Cham. Both are central and easy to reach by train or car.

Frequently asked questions about tutoring

Which subjects do you offer tutoring in?

Mainly in maths, German and English. Depending on the subject, school level and question, further subjects are possible too, we are happy to discuss this with you individually.

Which school levels is the tutoring suitable for?

For students of all levels, from primary school to lower secondary. The content follows the curriculum and the topics your child is currently working on.

One to one or group, which is better?

Both can make sense. One to one lessons are tailored entirely to your child and are particularly suited to specific gaps and intensive exam preparation. In a small group children learn from each other and see that others have questions too. We discuss with you what suits your child’s goal and personality.

How does getting started work?

In a short conversation we clarify where your child stands and what they want to achieve, whether closing gaps, mastering homework or preparing for an exam. A free trial lesson follows, and only then do you decide.

Where does the tutoring take place?

In our classrooms in Aarau (Laurenzenvorstadt 77, five minutes from the station, on the ground floor) and in Cham (Riedstrasse 3, 2nd floor with lift) or online.

How long will my child need tutoring?

There is no honest general answer to that. A clearly limited gap is different from uncertainty built up over several school years, and short term exam preparation is different from building better learning strategies. That is why we do not promise a set number of lessons before we know your child. Our goal is that over time less and less tutoring is needed.
